Brexit transition period

As a deal was agreed before the UK left the EU on 31 January 2020, the rights of Europeans and their family members who were resident in the UK before Brexit, and those who arrive before the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020, remain the same.

  • Europeans and their family members who were resident in the UK before the exit date (31 January 2020) should apply for Pre-Settled or Settled status before 31 December 2020, but we understand the latest deadline for applications will be 30 June 2021.
  • Those who have arrived after the exit date (31 January 2020), but during the transition period, must apply for Pre-Settled or Settled status before 31 December 2020 if they intend to stay in the UK. If they will leave the UK before the end of 2020, however, they do not need to apply for anything.

Pre-Settled status is granted to those who have been living in the UK for less than five years, Settled status is for those who have lived in the UK for five years or more.
